The Chair will call the meeting to order. With great respect and humility, we acknowledge and honour the lands of the Snuneymuxw people. The Snuneymuxw people maintain their profound, unique and spiritual connection to the land through ageless traditions, teachings, stewardship and expressions of reciprocity.

The Chair called the meeting to order at 4:02 pm.

Bayview Gift Store be added as item 11.1 under New Business.

Presentation on the Board Goal: Continuous Improvement of Instruction and Assessment

  • Objective: Increase leadership capacity and excellence.
  • Strategies: Facilitate educational leader growth plan and evaluation process.  Facilitate data review and implementation of the school plan process.

School Presentations by Dover Bay Secondary School and Chase River Elementary School

Don Balcombe and Jacquie Poulin, Assistant Superintendents presented on the Board's Goal of Continuous Improvement of Instruction and Assessment. School Administrators and staff from Dover Bay Secondary and Chase River Elementary shared how the Board's goal is being implemented at the school level.  An Information Sheet is attached to the Agenda. 

Re: Local Three-Year Calendar

Don Balcombe, Assistant Superintendent, provided information on the Board's authority to set local school calendars and some background on the local School Calendar Committee. The local School Calendar Committee has provided draft local school calendars for the 2023/24, 2024/25 and 2025/26 for consideration.  An Action Sheet, together with the draft calendars, are attached to the Agenda.

    The Education Committee recommends that the Board of Education of School District No. 68 (Nanaimo-Ladysmith) make the attached three-year draft Local School Calendar for 2023/24, 2024/25 and 2025/26 available to the public for 30 days utilizing the consultation process as per Board Governance, Section 1, 2.17 and to report back at the February Education Committee meeting with recommendations.

Re: Bayview Gift Store

Trustee shared that Bayview Elementary's Christmas Store is looking for donations.  Donations can be dropped off at Bayview Elementary School by Friday, December 9, 2022.

Question Period is intended to enable the public to obtain clarifying information regarding a current agenda item.


Individuals wishing to ask questions of the Board upon completion of Committee and Board sessions shall do so in writing on the form provided which includes their name, street address and email address.  The individual will be asked to verify his/her self and be afforded the opportunity to read out their own question.  Each individual shall be limited to one follow-up question upon receiving a response. Forms are available in the information rack near the entrance of the Board Room.


If the meeting is being held online, individuals wishing to ask questions of the Board shall type their question in the Q&A compose box on the right side of the screen and then select send. Your question will be read by the Board or Committee Chair.


Questions and responses will be included in the video of the meeting and the meeting minutes and will be part of the public record.
