The Chair will call the meeting to order. With great respect and humility, we acknowledge and honour the lands of the Snuneymuxw people. The Snuneymuxw people maintain their profound, unique and spiritual connection to the land through ageless traditions, teachings, stewardship and expressions of reciprocity.

The Chair called the meeting to order at 6:00 pm.

Trustee Morvay will make an announcement at the end of the meeting.

Presentation on the Board Goal: Truth and Reconciliation 


Objectives:

  • Implementation of the Syeyutsus Reconciliation Framework in the school community; Promote land and Hul’q’umi’num language-based learning programs
  • Support innovative Indigenous educational and community partnerships
  • Implement Truth & Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action #57

Strategies:

  • Create strategies to decolonize the system
  • Bridging relationships with rights holders and Indigenous partners with our school team
  • Support the Indigenous focus grad requirements
  • Foster opportunities for School Communities to learn about the local land, language and culture 

School Presentations by Dover Bay Secondary and Seaview Elementary 


Hul'q'umi'num Language Overview and Lesson with Adam Manson, Hul'q'umi'num Language Teacher

Senior staff from the Department of Learning Services provided an overview of how the Board's goal of Truth and Reconciliation is impacting all areas of the District.  Ricki Bartlett shared how the District is committed to creating systems, structures and environments of equity – where Indigenous students and families feel a true sense of belonging in the school setting, and strong connections to the people within them . An Information Sheet is attached to the Agenda.

School Administrators and staff from Dover Bay Secondary School and Seaview View Elementary School shared how the Board's goal of Truth and Reconciliation has impacted schools. 

Hul'q'umi'num Language Teacher, Adam Manson provided a mini hul'q'umi'num language lesson and resources available for continued learning.

Re: Elementary Inclusion Outreach Program 

Kerri Steel and Trina Norgan provided information on the District's Inclusion Outreach Team and the support they provide school teams throughout the District.  An Information Sheet is attached to the Agenda.

Re: Notice of Motion - Student Representation at Education Committee Meetings

    The Education Committee recommends that the Board of Education's Education Committee have a robust discussion on student inclusion and engagement with respect to student representation on the Education Committee and produce a recommendation for the Board of Education for implementation for student inclusion and representation no later than 120 days of the motion passing.

Question Period is intended to enable the public to obtain clarifying information regarding a current agenda item.


Individuals wishing to ask questions of the Board upon completion of Committee and Board sessions shall do so in writing on the form provided which includes their name, street address and email address.  The individual will be asked to verify his/her self and be afforded the opportunity to read out their own question.  Each individual shall be limited to one follow-up question upon receiving a response. Forms are available in the information rack near the entrance of the Board Room.


If the meeting is being held online, individuals wishing to ask questions of the Board shall type their question in the Q&A compose box on the right side of the screen and then select send. Your question will be read by the Board or Committee Chair.


Questions and responses will be included in the video of the meeting and the meeting minutes and will be part of the public record.
