Dan Morris, NLSF President, Kathy Berg, NLSF Vice President and Crystal Dennison, Executive Director of the Nanaimo-Ladysmith Schools Foundation, provided an overview of the many important initiatives that support students across the district. The presentation is attached to the Agenda.

    That the Board of Education of School District No. 68 adopt the Annual Budget Bylaw for fiscal year 2023/2024 cited as “School District No. 68 (Nanaimo-Ladysmith) Annual Budget Bylaw for fiscal year 2023/2024” being a bylaw associated with the annual budget showing the estimated revenue and expense for the 2023/2024 fiscal year and the total budget bylaw amount of $200,588,300 for the 2023/2024 fiscal year.

    Read a first time this 24th day of May, 2023.

    The Board of Education of School District No. 68 (Nanaimo-Ladysmith) approve the Terms of Reference for the Safe Schools Committee.

    The Board of Education of School District No. 68 (Nanaimo-Ladysmith) directs that Rutherford Elementary School be reopened as of September 2025 subject to final approval following the September 2023 confirmation of student count and that staff are directed to create a School Transition Working Group to address issues associated with reopening the facility and programming options to ensure long term viability of the facility.

    That the Board of Education of School District No. 68 (Nanaimo-Ladysmith) request that staff provide a list of student engagement involvement at the district and board level and to report back at the next Education Committee meeting.

Re: SOGI in Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools 

Scott Saywell presented a recommended motion that is intended to highlight the Board’s commitment to providing an inclusive and equitable learning environment for all students.  An Action Sheet is attached to the Agenda. 

Trustee Keller turned the Chair over to Trustee McKay for the discussion and vote on this matter. Upon completion of the vote, Trustee Keller resumed the Chair.

    The Board of Education of School District No. 68 (Nanaimo-Ladysmith) affirms its commitment to promoting and supporting SOGI inclusion within the District’s schools, providing a safe, welcoming, caring, and inclusive environment where diversity is celebrated and every student feels valued, respected, and supported.

Mark Walsh advised that there was no community feedback on the Policy and provided a brief reminder of the content of the Policy for the Board’s final consideration.

Question Period is intended to enable the public to obtain clarifying information regarding a current agenda item.


Individuals wishing to ask questions of the Board upon completion of Committee and Board sessions shall do so in writing on the form provided which includes their name, street address and email address.  The individual will be asked to verify his/her self and be afforded the opportunity to read out their own question.  Each individual shall be limited to one follow-up question upon receiving a response. Forms are available in the information rack near the entrance of the Board Room.
